The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (VAHCC) is pleased to announce this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, a period set aside to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. The VAHCC invites all Virginians to participate in cultural activities and opportunities during this month-long celebration to learn about and engage with this growing and powerful group.
Virginia’s Latinos contribute greatly to all facets of Virginia’s economy, including military, education, science, government, and business. Of the Hispanic Business 500 list, 18 are located in Virginia; these are the nation’s top 500 Hispanic-owned businesses.
While comprising just over 8% of Virginia’s population, Latinos in Virginia have increased 92% since 2000, accounting for 38% of all population growth in Virginia. With a median age of Virginia’s Hispanic population at 26, this is a young, growing, and economically powerful segment of Virginia’s population.
The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been in the business of “Building Bridges” for 15 years. “Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity to reflect on the participation of Latinos in Virginia’s culture and economy. Join us in celebrating the success of Virginia and the contributions of its Latino citizens,” says Michel Zajur, VAHCC President and CEO.
The month-long celebration will conclude with The Hispanic Gala, held at Dover Hall Estate near Richmond on October 16th. This year’s theme is “Celebrating VAHCC’s Quinceañera,” to recognize 15 years of operation for the VAHCC. Over 400 attendees from all corners of the commonwealth will include leaders in business, industry, government officials, and other influential members and friends of Virginia’s Hispanic Community.
