(Richmond, Va.) On February 7th, 2012, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted a delegation of nearly 40 Colombian business and local government leaders from the Amazon and Amaroquia regions of Colombia.  They were interested in learning more about what Virginia has to offer companies looking to invest in Virginia as well as opportunities in the Virginia marketplace.

Brought by the Hayek Foundation International, a Colombian Foundation striving to bring about open markets in Colombia and Latin America, the group wanted to come to the Capital of Virginia to see it first hand.

While here, they were recognized from the floors of both the House of Delegates and the Senate, by Delegate Alfonso Lopez (D, 49th District) and Senator John Watkins (R, District 10).  A particularly warm welcome was extended by Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, President of the Senate.  It was evident that the delegation felt welcomed and were impressed by both the beauty of the Capital and friendliness of legislators.

Also while in Richmond, they heard presentations by both VAHCC staff and Greg Wingfield, president of the Greater Richmond Partnership, about the services that each group offers and the benefits of locating and doing business in Richmond, and Virginia generally.

The group lunched with Secretary of Commerce Jim Cheng, and were visited and welcomed by Mayor Dwight Jones.  Also visiting the group was Wayne Waldrop, Director of Business Information Services for the Virginia Department of Business Assistance.

Following, the delegation repaired to the Monument Avenue home of Chamber member Evelia Porto-Gonzalez, where they were welcomed with "Un Tinto,” a Colombian cup of coffee.  The visit to this historic part of Richmond was especially meaningful to the group who was just as interested in learning about the culture of Richmond, and Virginia, as its business climate.

"Bringing groups like this to Richmond is so important to showcase the many cultural and business amenities Virginia has to offer.  The VAHCC strives carry the banner of Virginia to Latin America and the world and be a facilitator for anyone wishing to invest here," says Michel Zajur, VAHCC President.

From the Capital to Monument Avenue, it was clear the the trip to Richmond was productive for the group, and the hospitality and genuine interest shown the visitors by so many went a long way in carrying the message "Virginia is Open for Business.”
